A furnace can keep your family comfortable through a Chicagoland cold snap, but it should never make you question the air you breathe. So, can furnace leak carbon monoxide? Yes. Any fuel-burning furnace can create a carbon monoxide risk when combustion gases are not safely vented outdoors. The good news is that proper installation, working detectors, and regular professional maintenance greatly reduce that risk.
Carbon monoxide, often called CO, is a colorless and odorless gas produced when fuels such as natural gas, propane, oil, wood, or gasoline burn. Because you cannot see or smell it, the safest approach is prevention rather than trying to spot it yourself.
A properly operating gas furnace burns fuel in a sealed combustion process and sends exhaust gases outside through the venting system. Carbon monoxide becomes a concern when that process is disrupted or exhaust cannot leave the building as designed.

An electric furnace does not burn fuel, so it does not produce carbon monoxide. However, homes with electric heat may still have CO risks from fireplaces, water heaters, attached garages, gas ranges, or other fuel-burning equipment.
A carbon monoxide detector is the only reliable way to alert occupants to elevated CO levels. Do not wait for a smell, and do not rely on physical symptoms to tell you whether your home is safe.
That said, a few furnace-related signs deserve prompt attention. Yellow or flickering burner flames can indicate incomplete combustion, although flame appearance should be assessed by a trained technician. Soot or dark staining around the furnace, vent connections, or nearby walls can also point to a combustion or venting issue. Excessive moisture on windows, rust around the flue pipe, repeated furnace shutdowns, or a unit that runs but does not heat reliably are additional reasons to schedule service.
Symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure can resemble the flu, including headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, confusion, chest discomfort, or shortness of breath. Several people feeling ill at the same time, especially when symptoms improve away from the building, should be treated seriously. Infants, older adults, pets, and people with heart or respiratory conditions may be affected more quickly.
Never use symptoms as a test. Carbon monoxide can overcome people before they recognize what is happening.
Treat every carbon monoxide alarm as real unless emergency responders or qualified professionals determine otherwise. Do not try to locate the source, reset the alarm repeatedly, or spend time opening windows before leaving.
Get everyone, including pets, outside to fresh air immediately. From a safe location, call 911 or your local fire department. If anyone has symptoms, seek medical care right away. Do not re-enter the home until emergency personnel say it is safe.
Once the immediate danger has been addressed, arrange for a qualified HVAC technician to inspect the furnace and related venting. The source may be the furnace, but it could also be a water heater, fireplace, boiler, gas appliance, or an idling vehicle in an attached garage. Finding the actual cause matters before any equipment is placed back into service.
A low-battery chirp is different from a full CO alarm, but it still needs attention. Replace batteries according to the detector manufacturer’s instructions, keep detectors within their service life, and replace the entire unit when it reaches its expiration date. Many detectors have a useful life of five to 10 years.
Every home with fuel-burning appliances, a fireplace, or an attached garage should have working CO detectors. Place one on each level of the home, including near sleeping areas, so an alarm can wake occupants at night. Follow the detector manufacturer’s placement instructions carefully. Locations too close to fuel-burning appliances, bathrooms, windows, or supply vents may lead to nuisance alarms or reduced performance.
For commercial properties, detector requirements and placement can vary by building use, equipment type, and local code. Property managers should make CO safety part of their routine life-safety and HVAC maintenance planning, particularly in buildings with boilers, unit heaters, commercial kitchens, or attached parking areas.
Test alarms monthly, replace batteries as recommended, and make sure everyone in the household recognizes the alarm sound and knows the exit plan. A detector is a life-safety device, not a maintenance reminder to ignore.
Annual furnace maintenance is one of the most practical ways to reduce preventable CO risks. During a professional heating tune-up, a technician can inspect burners, venting, electrical connections, safety controls, filters, drainage components, and overall furnace operation. Combustion testing and carbon monoxide testing can help identify concerns that are not visible during a quick look at the equipment.
Homeowners also have a role. Keep the furnace area clear of boxes, paint, cleaners, and other stored items. Replace air filters on schedule, because restricted airflow can contribute to overheating and equipment stress. Keep exterior intake and exhaust terminations clear of snow, ice, leaves, nests, and debris. In northern Illinois, this is especially worthwhile after heavy snow or wind events.
Do not cover vents, modify flue piping, or attempt burner adjustments yourself. A furnace may seem to be running normally even when a venting or combustion problem is developing. Professional diagnosis protects both your equipment and the people inside the building.
A furnace issue does not always mean the entire system needs replacement. A loose vent connection, failed pressure switch, dirty burner, or worn inducer motor may be repairable when addressed promptly. The right answer depends on the furnace’s age, condition, repair history, efficiency, and the nature of the safety concern.
A confirmed cracked heat exchanger deserves a more careful conversation. In many cases, replacement is the safer and more cost-effective long-term choice, particularly for an older furnace with other reliability issues. A qualified technician should explain the findings, show you the affected components when possible, and provide clear repair or replacement options without pressure.
