It may start with a radiator that stays lukewarm, a pressure gauge that keeps dropping, or a new banging sound just as a cold Chicagoland night moves in. One symptom does not always mean the boiler is near the end of its life, but it does mean the system needs a qualified diagnosis rather than a guess.

Do not try to locate the leak yourself.
Turn off the system and seek help quickly if you see significant leaking, smell burning or electrical odors, notice smoke, or hear unusually loud mechanical sounds. Modern boilers often provide diagnostic codes, but a code is a starting point, not a final answer. For example, a low-pressure code could result from a leak, a faulty expansion tank, a malfunctioning fill valve, or a recent service issue. Resetting the boiler may temporarily bring back heat, but it does not resolve the condition that caused the shutdown.
A good service visit should leave you with a clear explanation of the issue, the recommended repair, and any conditions worth monitoring. Ask about repair options, expected part availability, and whether the technician sees signs that other components may soon need attention. Straight answers help you plan without being pressured into a replacement that may not be necessary.
