How to Reduce HVAC Humidity in Your Home

A home can feel sticky at 72 degrees when indoor moisture is high. If you are wondering how to reduce HVAC humidity, the answer is not always to lower the thermostat. Your air conditioner should remove moisture as it cools, but airflow problems, system settings, equipment sizing, and moisture entering the house can all limit that process.

In Chicagoland, humidity often becomes most noticeable during long summer stretches, after heavy rain, or in lower levels of the home. Addressing it early protects more than comfort. Excess indoor humidity can encourage musty odors, condensation on windows, mold growth, and unnecessary strain on your cooling equipment.

What indoor humidity level should you aim for?

Most homes are comfortable when relative humidity stays between 30% and 50%. During cooling season, many homeowners find that 40% to 50% feels best. A simple hygrometer can show whether humidity is actually the problem before you make changes to your HVAC settings.

Readings above 55% are worth addressing, especially if you notice damp-feeling rooms, condensation on vents or windows, peeling paint, warped wood, or a persistent basement odor. A single high reading after a storm is less concerning than humidity that remains elevated day after day.

How your HVAC system removes moisture

When warm indoor air passes over your air conditioner’s cold evaporator coil, water vapor condenses into liquid water. That water flows into a drain pan and out through the condensate line. The system then sends cooler, drier air back through the home.

For that process to work well, the equipment needs adequate run time, clean components, correct refrigerant operation, and proper airflow. An air conditioner that turns on and off in short bursts may lower the temperature without running long enough to remove much moisture. That is why a home can be cool but still feel clammy.

Start with the thermostat fan setting

Set the thermostat fan to Auto rather than On during humid weather. In the Auto setting, the blower runs only while the system is actively cooling. This allows the moisture collected on the coil to drain away after each cooling cycle.

When the fan is set to On, it continues circulating air after the compressor stops. Some moisture remaining on the coil can evaporate back into the air stream and return to your rooms. Continuous fan operation can have benefits for air circulation in certain homes, but it may work against humidity control unless your system has controls designed specifically for that purpose.

Keep airflow clean and balanced

A clogged air filter is one of the simplest causes of poor HVAC performance. It restricts airflow across the evaporator coil, which can reduce cooling efficiency and, in some cases, cause the coil to freeze. Check the filter monthly during heavy-use months and replace it based on its condition and the manufacturer’s recommendation.

Do not assume that the most restrictive filter is always the best choice. Very high-efficiency filters can create airflow issues if the system was not designed for them. The right filter balances particle capture with the airflow your furnace or air handler needs.

Keep supply registers open and clear of furniture, rugs, and drapes. Closing too many vents does not usually force more cooling into the rooms you prefer. Instead, it can raise static pressure, reduce airflow, and make the system less effective. If one area is consistently humid while the rest of the house feels fine, the issue may be duct leakage, poor return-air design, insulation gaps, or an unbalanced system rather than the thermostat.

Check the condensate drain and indoor coil

Your AC cannot remove moisture if the water it collects has nowhere to go. A clogged condensate drain line can lead to water backups, system shutdowns, and humidity concerns. Warning signs include water around the indoor unit, a drain safety switch shutting the system off, mildew near the air handler, or a musty odor when cooling starts.

The evaporator coil also needs periodic professional cleaning. Dust and buildup on the coil reduce heat transfer and affect how efficiently it removes moisture. This is not a do-it-yourself cleaning project for most homeowners. The coil is delicate, and a technician should also inspect the drain pan, trap, line, and system operation while servicing it.

Avoid setting the temperature too low

Lowering the thermostat may make the house feel better temporarily, but it is not always the best way to manage humidity. It can increase energy use, leave some areas uncomfortably cold, and fail to correct the underlying issue.

Try a reasonable cooling setting, often around 72 to 76 degrees depending on your household’s comfort preferences, and monitor humidity separately. If the system maintains temperature but cannot keep relative humidity below about 55%, it is time to investigate why. A properly functioning system should deliver both sensible cooling and meaningful moisture removal under normal conditions.

Consider whether the AC is oversized

An oversized air conditioner is a common but often overlooked humidity problem. Bigger equipment cools the home very quickly, then shuts off. Those short cycles may satisfy the thermostat before the coil has had enough time to pull moisture from the air.

The solution is not automatically replacement. A contractor should first confirm whether short cycling is caused by equipment size, thermostat location, refrigerant problems, duct issues, or another repairable condition. If replacement is appropriate, insist on a proper load calculation. Square footage alone is not enough. Window exposure, insulation, air leakage, occupancy, ductwork, and home layout all affect the right equipment size.

Variable-speed and two-stage systems can be especially helpful in homes with persistent humidity because they can run longer at lower output. Longer, gentler cycles often provide better moisture removal and more even temperatures than a single-stage system that repeatedly blasts on and off.

Stop outdoor moisture from entering

Your HVAC system has to remove every bit of moisture that enters the house. Reducing that load can make a noticeable difference, particularly in older homes and finished basements.

Look for obvious air leaks around attic hatches, plumbing penetrations, recessed lighting, crawl-space access points, and poorly sealed windows or doors. Make sure bath fans vent outdoors, not into an attic. Run them during showers and for about 15 to 20 minutes afterward. Use the kitchen exhaust fan when boiling water or cooking for extended periods.

A damp basement may need separate attention. Water seepage, poor grading, disconnected downspouts, and foundation moisture can overwhelm a central AC system. A portable dehumidifier may help a small problem area, but it will not solve bulk water intrusion. Correct the water source first whenever possible.

When a whole-home dehumidifier makes sense

A whole-home dehumidifier works alongside your heating and cooling system to remove moisture independently of temperature. It can be a strong option for homes that stay humid even when the AC is working properly, households that prefer warmer thermostat settings, basements with ongoing dampness, or properties with high moisture loads.

Unlike a portable unit, a properly installed whole-home dehumidifier can treat a larger area, drain automatically, and maintain a chosen humidity level with less daily attention. It also lets your air conditioner focus on cooling rather than trying to solve every moisture issue on its own.

There is a trade-off: installation adds upfront cost and requires the right duct connection, drainage route, and electrical setup. For a home with a simple maintenance issue or a clogged drain, a dehumidifier would be an unnecessary expense. A professional assessment helps separate an equipment problem from a true need for added dehumidification.

Do not overlook maintenance and refrigerant issues

Low refrigerant, a failing blower motor, dirty outdoor coils, damaged ductwork, and aging controls can all affect comfort and humidity removal. Because these problems can look similar from the thermostat, guessing can lead to wasted money.

Seasonal maintenance gives a technician the chance to check cooling performance, airflow, electrical components, condensate drainage, and refrigerant operation before a small issue becomes a midsummer breakdown. It also helps preserve efficiency, which matters when cooling costs rise during humid weather.
